Learn More About The Nikon Coolpix P80 Camera

By James Smith

Most people select a camera to have a convenient way to capture memories while on vacation or during special family events. You are making the right choice by researching the features available on the Nikon Coolpix P80. This versatile camera has all the sophisticated features available in a D-SLR packed into the convenience of an easy to use point and shoot.

First we will explore the special features. The 18x zoom utilizes wide angle technology. Using raw numbers, it features f/2.8-4.5 with 4.6-84.2 mm. What you should take away is that it has a powerful zoom. You need this features for shooting photos from a long distance and close-ups of small objects.

The only con is some shacking with the zoom set at 18x. Nikon includes image-sensor shift capabilities to reduce shacking and eliminate blurry shots.

Now, lets discuss how Nikon is trying to bridge the gap between the point and shoot cameras and D-SLR. Point and shoot camera is a simple tools to take pictures and D-SLR are the more complex way to capture pictures. When I say complex, I mean you are able to control the focal length, how long the shutter says open and how light sensitive the camera is.

The Nikon Coolpix P80 gives users the ability to shoot in manual mode and take control of light levels and more. Users can shoot everything from lightning to landscapes. Slower shutters speeds are preferable for objects moving quickly. Faster speeds will capture the details of a hummingbird hovering over a flower. With so many options, you can develop a style all your own.

If you don't want to manually control all the settings you have a few options to isolate some features. You have the option to set your cameras to: Aperture-Priority Auto (A), Auto, Manual (M), Programmed Auto (P), Scene or Shutter-Priority Auto (S)

Are you feeling overwhelmed with all the technical advancements of this camera? The camera has two different personalities, one is the over technical biologist student and the other is the simple elementary teachers. The teacher has so much information in the bag but turns the information into simple activities to allow the students to learn the concepts. Try this teachers approach: Place the dial to Scene and choose one the many options. The camera will decided what needs to be done. Here are the options: Back Light, Beach/Snow, Close Up, Copy, Dusk/Dawn, Face-Priority AF, Fireworks Show, Landscape, Museum, Night Landscape, Night Portrait, Panorama Assist, Party, Portrait, Sports, Sunset, Voice Recording

There are options for white balance as well. Take a dive into control the functions yourself or use these presets. Auto, Cloudy, Daylight, Flash, Fluorescent, Incandescent, White Balance Preset

You can also control white balance. You can control the settings manually or select one of the following presets: Cloudy day photos, Flash photos, Daylight photos, Incandescent lighting, Fluorescent lighting, White Balance setting, Auto mode

Camera Advantages: The ISO sensitivity is 64-6400 Various flash settings Features rechargeable battery Option to use presets or manual controls Multiple Scene preset options

Camera Cons: Sometimes photos are washed out when taken in bright sunlight. Decreased picture quality at 18x zoom. Upload to computer is slow. The User need to remember to recharge the battery and No RAW file capability

My conclusion: This is the ideal camera for anyone who wants the option to point and shoot on the fly or get more involved with D-SLR and choose custom settings for taking photos. I hope this information will help you understand the advantages and disadvantages of the Nikon Coolpix P80 and you will soon be capturing your own memories to relive the moments and share them with friends and family
